The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

Chapter 2: TENSION

The next day, I tried to get to school early, but couldn’t because I spent a lot of time helping my mother, and went to bed very late.

Thankfully, the prefects on duty were the labour and assistant senior prefect, which are Senior Saheed, and Olamide, so they couldn’t punish me for coming late to school. I quickly ran into my class before the lecture started. I was lucky that my seat was in between Hameedat and Ahmeed, which means I was sitting right beside the cutest boy.

Great.

Our Mathematics teacher, Mr. O.G, he always prefer us to call him by his initials. He came in and started solving word problems. Gosh, I hate Mathematics. The calculations don’t just make any sense.

“I know, right?” Ahmeed said, smiling at me.

I froze.

Then he muttered a name and said it was going be my nickname. I didn’t hear him clearly but I smiled.
He started making funny jokes and I laughed, distracting some people in the class. Before I knew it, Mr. O.G asked me to come and solve a question.

Are you kidding me? Where was I supposed to start from? I don’t know Maths na.

I just stood there, staring at the board, hoping the answer would appear by itself. Then Mr. O.G saved me by asking Anthonia to solve it instead. Well, she’s very good in math, and a science student, so she solved it quickly like it was nothing and everyone clapped.

Before the class ended, we were given lots of assignments, so many that you would think we weren’t meant to submit them the next day and no matter how we complain he wouldn’t reduce the assignment.

I stared at Ahmeed who was already speaking to Felix who was beside him. I could look at him all day without blinking but before I went back to my seat, Nafisa signalled for me to come and I went.

“We are now dating,” she said excitedly, and I instantly knew what she was talking about.

“Since when?” I asked.

“Yesterday” She answered.

I laughed because everyone already saw this coming since JSS3.

Then she moved closer and whispered into my ear, “The new students is dating Bashir.”

My eyes widened. “Who?”

“Amira,” she replied.

Ah, so quick. I leaned back on the desk and watched them closely. Well, it looks like Bashir has finally given up on Desire. It’s probably for the best.

Another teacher came to the class and I quickly returned to my seat. The lecture wasn’t as difficult as mathematics but I’m still unfamiliar with most of the Art subjects.

Ahmeed continued to whisper different jokes with the funny nickname he called me, I wasn’t bored and classes went on and on till Bashir rang the bell.

After school closed, we continued our routine of going to the conference room to either gossip, hang out or settle misunderstandings.

One week passed and rumour began to spread in the class that Bashir and Amira broke up. She was now dating George.

“Is it because of Desire?” I asked Nafisa. Although, I doubt that Desire was affected by Bashir and Amira's relationship.

“No. Desire doesn’t care at all and that’s the problem because he thought she’d be jealous” Nafisa explained and just then, George and Amira walked into the class holding hands.

Amira didn’t even care that she was recently with Bashir. They were displaying affection openly in front of our classmates, feeding each other some junks they must have bought in the school.

Hameedat noticed too, then came to sit with us.

“Can you see what I’m saying?” she started.

“This is how a relationship is supposed to be. But Saheed would never show love to me publicly. He makes it seem as if I am forcing the relationship.”

I sighed.

This was exactly why I wanted her relationship with Saheed to be over. She compares everything, both good and bad, to her relationship, yet she won’t leave the boy. And when you tell her the truth, she turns it into a fight.

“Would you prefer to go back to Felix?” I asked, frustration obvious in my voice. “Because when you were with him, you didn’t cry and complain like this.”

She got angry immediately.

“How can you tell me to go back to my ex?” she snapped. “What kind of advice is that? If you think love is that simple, why don’t you try it too?”

She stomped out of the class. If I didn’t know her too well, I would have gotten angry.

I turned to Nafisa. “What did I say that was wrong?”

“Just leave her,” Nafisa replied. “When her body is calm, she’ll come back and apologize.”

I shook my head. Hameedat doesn’t listen at all yet she’d be acting like she’s the only victim in her relationship all the time. Whereas, we are all victims of her unhealthy relationship.

Nafisa nudged me out of my thought and showed me her chat with Khalid. I read their love messages and was in awe. This is how relationship messages are meant to be unlike Hameedat’s chat, that’s full of crying and heartbreak emojis.

“Maybe you should talk to Hameedat, teach her how to maintain a good and healthy relationship.” I suggested to Nafisa and she laughed.

Just then, Bashir rang the bell to signal the next period. Nafisa and other science students picked up their books and headed to the science laboratory.

I went back to my seat and started talking to Ahmeed. As usual, he started cracking different jokes, and since he was an Art student like me, Hameedat, and a few others, he continued to keep me company.

Speaking of Hameedat, she’s yet to return to the class. I shake away her name from my brain and focused my attention solely on Ahmeed. Unfortunately, we couldn’t exchange contacts because he has no phone and our discussion was interrupted when the next teacher came in.

She wasn’t as jovial as Mr. O.G, she chased out the science and commercial students and started teaching, I immediately glance around and noticed Hameedat is still not in class.

So, I asked for permission to step out. I went straight to SS2 class and found her sitting on Saheed’s thighs. Some of his classmates were minding their business, while others were busy displaying affection too.

“Hameedat, we have a class,” I said.

Instead of standing up, she held Saheed tighter, like he was about to disappear. I rolled my eyes and moved closer, about to pull her up, when Senior Olamide stopped me.

“She doesn’t want to go. You can leave the class,” he said, shielding them from me.

When I tried again to grab Hameedat’s arm, he pushed me, not enough to make me fall, but I lost my balance.

Someone held me.

It was George.

I didn’t even know he was in the class. I quickly pulled away from him. He wasn’t any different from the rest of them. After all, he was already dating Amira, even though he knew that she dated Bashir.

How could Amira even agree to date him?

George looked surprised by my reaction, I guess, he was expecting a thank you from me but I hissed and walked out of the class.

I didn’t understand where the sudden anger I felt came from, because this wasn’t the first time Hameedat skipped class to be with Saheed. She did it many times in JSS3 and I don’t care about George and Amira’s relationship.
