“I knew you were cheating, but because I kept quiet, you think I’m a fool!”
Hameedat’s angry voice echoed through the classroom as I stepped in, holding my gift while Saheed was sitting on Anthonia’s desk, his face dark with anger, but he didn’t say a word.
“Maybe na the gift she want… make Simi chop am!” Hameedat continued bitterly.
I quietly walked over to where Nafisa was sitting.
“What really happened?” I asked.
She shrugged. “I think Saheed and Simi have something going on… but I’m not sure.”
Just then Saheed stood up, slung his bag over his shoulder and looked at Olamide and Simi.
“Una no dey go house? Valentine don finish ooo. I get better things to do.”
Simi smiled and held Saheed’s hand as they walked out of the classroom together. Hand in hand.
That single action made Hameedat explode.
Still crying, she rained insults after them loudly, not even caring if teachers could hear. And honestly, most of the teachers already knew about the drama. They just pretended not to.
The following week was even worse.
Saheed and Hameedat officially broke up, and Saheed had started flaunting his “friendship” as he calls it, with Simi everywhere. It was almost unnecessary.
But instead of ignoring them, Hameedat kept going to their class just to insult them, almost every day. We begged her several times to leave Saheed alone, since he wanted to be with Simi but she’s stubborn and everyone minded their business.
The term was gradually coming to an end and the SS3 students were preparing seriously for their upcoming WAEC examinations. Even senior Chinedu was also writing the exam, though he was in SS2, so he had to stay behind for extra lessons and couldn’t participate in the next school activity which was Colour Week.
Mrs. Adeoye later announced the colours we were to wear for each day of the week and selected students who would represent their classes to talk about the colours during assembly.
Our class was extremely excited. Not only did we get to show the other classes, especially the SS2 students, that we were smarter, but we also had one whole week without wearing our uniforms.
However, Hameedat has been skipping classes than usual and wasn’t aware about the chosen colours for next week. I made up my mind to search for her and talk sense into her brain, since she wasn’t dating Saheed again, she shouldn’t be absent from class. As I walked along the corridor, I heard Olamide’s voice.
“Why were you acting like that?”
Curious, I slowed down and quietly peeped into the conference room.
Inside, Olamide and Hameedat were standing very close to each other. Hameedat was crying while speaking in a low voice. I couldn’t hear everything clearly, but I could tell he was talking about the way she rejected Saheed’s Valentine’s gift.
I guess this is why she is skipping class, she’s trying to fix her relationship. Well, I decided to mind my business and continued walking to the staff room to submit my note for marking instead.
But on my way back to class, I passed the conference room again, this time, I didn’t hear voices. Just soft movements that showed someone was still inside.
Curiosity got the better of me.
I peeped again.
Olamide’s hand was around Hameedat’s neck while her hands rested on his chest. The corner where they stood was dark, but I could swear they were kissing.
I didn’t interrupt them. I simply walked back to my classroom and sat quietly at my desk.
Honestly, I wasn’t even surprised. The two of them had always been close. They visited each other’s houses all the time but if she was also cheating, why was she making such a big deal about Saheed and Simi?
I even doubted Saheed had anything serious with Simi. And even if he did, Hameedat didn’t have the right to be that dramatic about it.
“Are you still on this planet, Zara?!” Jerry’s loud voice almost destroyed my ears, interrupting my thoughts.
I turned and saw that he and George had been trying to get my attention for a while.
“Do you want to make me deaf?” I snapped back, standing up and surprising them. I wasn’t in the mood for their jokes, so I walked over to meet Desire.
I told her everything I had just seen and she laughed. Like she actually laughed.
“Almost everybody has caught them before,” she said casually. “Hameedat even begged me not to tell Saheed.”
My eyes widened.
“Then why is she always crying and insulting him?”
Desire shrugged. “Because she likes drama. And she wants attention.”
Finally, the bell rang, signalling the end of school for the day.
Everyone quickly grabbed their bags and started leaving the classroom but George stopped me.
“Are you angry with me?” he asked.
I shook my head.
“Then what’s the problem?”
I hesitated because I didn’t want to tell him about Hameedat and Olamide yet because he was close to the SS2 boys but he kept disturbing me until I finally told him everything.
He stared at me in disbelief.
“You just dey know?” he asked.
Then he sighed.
“That thing don dey happen since.”
He explained that their affair had been going on for a long time but nobody wanted to say anything to Saheed.
I stood there, stunned. Wow.
