The next day, school felt strangely exciting. Jerry, George, and I grew closer, and it amazed me how much I enjoyed their company, more than I did my female friends.
Jerry’s jokes never ended. He was effortlessly funny, always finding a way to lighten my mood. George, on the other hand, tried too hard sometimes, but in a sweet way. Both of them bought things for me during break, but George always went the extra mile, making his intentions obvious and teasing me to call him a nickname, ‘Big Daddy.'
“Big Daddy wants you to buy anything you want,” he’d say, pressing money into my hand with a grin.
At first, I refused and argued but after a while, I stopped resisting and started enjoying their company.
As for Ahmeed, he was back in school and doing everything he could to make me forgive him. I smiled and eventually did, after all, what was the point of holding onto anger? I was never his girlfriend.
We agreed to remain friends. Then he asked carefully, “Is it okay if Wonuola and I remain close? I noticed George likes you a lot.”
I laughed. “Of course. You can be friends with anyone. And I’m not even sure about George’s feelings. He was with Amira before.”
This time, Ahmeed laughed and confirmed what George had once said that Amira had pushed the relationship on him.
However George and Amira started or ended, I don’t care. It felt strange even talking about it with Ahmeed.
He was about to say something when Hameedat suddenly rushed into the class, grabbed my hand, and dragged me out.
“What happened?” I asked, worried, but she didn’t respond until we got to the SS2 class.
“Tell him what happened on Tuesday, on our way home,” Hameedat said, confusing me even more.
We stood before the SS2 students, and some of our classmates, including Jerry and George.
“What are you talking about?” I asked, confusion written all over my face.
Saheed spoke instead. His voice was harsh, almost frightening. “I don’t care what really happened. I warned you not to go with Amira that day, but you didn’t listen. Now there’s an issue.”
Before I could even process his words, Desire rushed into the class.
“Hameedat, Zara, and Nafisa, Mr. O.G wants you in the conference room immediately.”
I turned to Nafisa, still confused, and that’s when she whispered the issue: Mr. O.G had found out that you guys went with Amira to DJ Tye-Cruise’s house.
Fuck.
My eyes widened. How did he find out? We are in serious trouble.
As we were about to leave, Saheed suddenly said, “You don’t always hesitate to break up with me. So, this time it’s over and I’m serious.”
For the first time, Hameedat was silent but I could see her trying so hard to fight back her tears.
Why would Saheed break up with her now when she needs him?
On our way to the conference room, I asked Nafisa how Mr. O.G knew we went to DJ Tye-cruise’s house.
“Amira left school early today,” she explained. “She said you and Hameedat knew where she was going.”
My eyes widened. Amira only told me that she wasn’t feeling well, she never said anything about leaving the school. And that day, we were all walking home together when Amira casually mentioned she had a new boyfriend who lived nearby.
What kind of problem is this?
My thoughts were cut short as we entered the conference room and heard Mr. O.G’s angry voice.
“You left school without permission, in your uniforms, to meet someone much older than you. During SDC, each of you will explain what led you to DJ Tye-Cruise’s house on Tuesday.”
SDC?
Amira was soaked in tears, rambling through explanations filled with lies. Worse, she kept mentioning Hameedat and me, dragging us deeper into her mess.
Before I could speak, Hameedat exploded. “Stop lying! You never told anyone that you were leaving the house and that day you begged us to escort you to DJ Tye-cruise’s house, we didn’t even enter the house”
Mr. O.G sighed, clearly exhausted. He instructed Nafisa and Desire to write down our names and submit a letter for the disciplinary committee meeting before walking out.
My heart dropped.
School disciplinary committee (SDC) meant parents. Punishment. Maybe even Suspension Worse, expulsion.
“How dare you!” Hameedat screamed at Amira, and the next moment they were fighting. Desire and Nafisa tried to separate them while I sank into one of the empty chairs, tears streaming down my face.
I cried quietly and bitterly, blaming myself, and remembering how I didn’t even want to go that day, but Hameedat had insisted. She said nothing bad would happen to us if we went with Amira to DJ Tye-Cruise’s house. Now, everything was falling apart.
“You are such a liar, and a wicked person,” Hameedat said to Amira as tears streamed down her face.
Amira showed no remorse. She only hissed and angrily stomped out of the conference room.
Silence followed.
“What really happened?” Desire finally asked. “Because this is very serious.”
I wiped my tears and began.
“After we left school on Tuesday, you had already gone home. Nafisa was still talking with Khalid, while Hameedat, Amira, and I were playing around with George, Jerry, Felix, and Francis. Then Amira suddenly mentioned that her new boyfriend lives close by.”
I paused, then continued.
“We weren’t surprised that she already had a new boyfriend, but we were shocked when she said she wanted to see him. Felix told Saheed, who was walking behind us, and Saheed immediately warned Hameedat not to go anywhere with Amira.”
Nafisa and Desire listened quietly.
“When we got to the junction where Nafisa, Khalid, and the twins branched off to their houses, Amira started begging us to escort her to DJ Tye-Cruise’s house. I didn’t want to go because my house wasn’t on that route, but Hameedat begged me to follow her, she said it was so DJ Tye-Cruise wouldn’t take advantage of Amira, considering his age.”
I sniffed as tears were pouring down my face.
“Saheed kept insisting that we shouldn’t go, but we eventually turned into the street that led to DJ Tye-Cruise’s house. When we got there, Hameedat and I refused to enter. We were scared when we saw more than two grown adults inside. We begged Amira not to go in, but she did. We only stood at the corner outside.”
My voice trembled.
“It took almost thirty minutes before she came out. She said nothing happened, even though she looked different. Then we all left and went home.”
Nafisa and Desire sighed.
“That’s completely different from what Amira said to Mr. O.G,” Desire said carefully.
I turned to Hameedat, and she immediately started cursing under her breath.
But Desire continued, “Is it true that Amira informed both of you that she wasn’t feeling well today, and that you knew she was leaving school to meet DJ Tye-Cruise?”
I gasped. “She’s lying! I had no idea she left school to meet anyone. Maybe Hameedat knows—”
Before I could finish, Hameedat shook her head fiercely.
“Please, I don’t know anything about Amira leaving school to see anyone,” she said. “I only knew she wasn’t feeling well today.”
I nodded in agreement.
