The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

Chapter 9: MOOD SWING

As soon as I got home, I texted George. He replied almost immediately, reassuring me that he would be in school the next day. My heart felt lighter, and with excitement bubbling inside me, I narrated everything that had happened in school so far. He listened, well, read patiently and kept saying how much he couldn’t wait to resume.

That night, I slept very late. Not only because I helped my mum with some chores, but because I simply couldn’t stop texting my boyfriend. By the time I finally slept, my eyes were already aching.

As usual, I got to school late the next morning. Unfortunately for me, I couldn’t escape punishment this time. The school proprietress herself was the one coordinating punishment for latecomers. No mercy. No excuses.

By the time I entered the class, the first period was almost over. I had missed a lot already and was sweating profusely. My uniform clung uncomfortably to my body, and this was definitely not how I imagined my day would start.

I was too tired to care about anything. I sat quietly on my seat, resting my head on the desk. Not long after, the lesson ended and, as usual, gossip started flying around the class. I could hear bits and pieces of different conversations, but I wasn’t really in the mood to join anyone.

“Hey,” Jerry said, dropping into the seat beside me.

I didn’t respond.

Instead of taking the hint and leaving me alone, he started poking me, tapping my shoulder, making silly faces, doing everything possible to get a reaction. Before I knew it, I was chasing him around the class, laughing loudly like a primary school pupil. So much for being tired.

“What happened?” George asked as soon as I sat on his table, breathing heavily.

I looked at him, confused.

“You came late, and your mood has been sour since,” he explained.

I smiled and shrugged, but he wasn’t satisfied with that answer. To be honest, I didn’t even have a proper explanation. I was just tired both physically and mentally.

“Call it mood swing,” I replied.

“Your mood swings are affecting our relationship,” he said seriously.

I glared at George.

He burst into laughter immediately and started teasing me. Naughty boy.

Another teacher walked into the class, forcing me back to my seat. Even then, George refused to behave. He kept throwing bits of paper, pens, even pencils at me, laughing quietly each time. He almost got punished for it, and I had to signal him to calm down.

Break time finally came, and with it came fresh gossip.

The latest news was that Hameedat had begged Saheed to take her back. Chinedu was now dating Wonuola, Bashir had shifted his attention to some JSS3 girls, and as usual, everyone had an opinion about everything.

I listened quietly, shaking my head. At least Wonuola had moved on from Ahmeed.

“Olamide and Gideon are fighting because Vivian has refused to date Gideon,” Amira rushed into the class and announced.

Nafisa and Hameedat immediately followed her out. I pretended not to hear anything. Whatever SS2 students wanted to do with their lives was none of my business.

I listened quietly, shaking my head.

Throughout the day, everyone in class kept talking about how Felix anger issues has been transferred to Gideon as he was behaving reckless and rude to teachers.

Desire sat beside me, "How can two boys be fighting each other because of a girl?" she asked

I shrugged, "Is it Gideon?" I asked instead.

She nodded and explained better, "Gideon and Olamide are fighting because of Vivian and it seems she has a boyfriend at home but no one knows. She rarely comes to school"

I moved closer to her so that our voices would not be heard if any teacher came in, "Didn't Gideon kiss Amira in the staff room that time when she was still dating Chinedu?" I asked and she nodded.

How can Gideon claim to like Vivian yet he kissed his friend's girlfriend in the staff room, claiming that he wanted to prove that Amira had no level of respect. I shook my head, "He has no respect for himself or the girl he claims to like. I don't blame Vivian for refusing to be with him." I said honestly.

Desire sighed, "All this relationship thing doesn't even any make sense to me. Don't be offended oo"

I smiled. The truth is that she's right, relationship doesn't make sense when you are forcing it or always arguing with each other like Saheed and Hammedat but at least they have finally found a way to understand each other and this term it's less argument and crying.

"To be honest, I thought Olamide likes Hameedat too because their closeness last term was very questionable." I said in a lower voice.

Desire eyes widened as she whispered, "I thought I was the only one that noticed."

Bashir interrupted our conversation and winked at me to give him space to talk to desire. Even though, he has had several talk with Desire, she wasn't close to accepting him, regardless, I left my seat so he can sit and try his luck again.

I watched them closely at the corner where I sat and I felt pity for Bashir. He bought some snacks for Desire but she rejected it.

He tried to hold her hand but she removed it, and it looks like she warned him against touching her again.

I tried to hear what they were saying but couldn't hear anything, if only the rumours we're true and Bashir had moved on to any of the JSS3 student because no girl in our class, not even Anthonia would date him. He already made it clear that Desire is the only one that occupied his heart.

Bashir was looking sad and still trying to convince Desire when Gideon entered the class to drag him away.

Quickly, I rushed back to my seat and asked, "What happened?"

"I don't know but please tell Bashir to leave me alone." Desire answered as she gave me the snacks Bashir had bought for her.

"Are you sure you don't want?" I asked and she carried her chemistry textbook and note and left the class.

It was obvious that she was pissed at Bashir's persistency but he's so stubborn and won't listen to anyone.

I opened one of the snacks and ate, if at all, this shouldn't go to waste.

It’s time to drop your comment.
Desire has decided not to give Bashir a chance, even though his feelings seemed genuine. Do we agree with Desire’s decision?
