BENEATH THE GOLD

Chapter 2: Temptation in Silk

Kate had never been inside a car like this before.

The interior of the black Mercedes smelled of leather and sandalwood. The driver, dressed in a neatly pressed uniform, didn’t speak as he navigated through the busy streets of Ikoyi. Kate sat in the back seat, her hands folded tightly in her lap, the weight of her decision pressing on her chest like a stone.

She was on her way to dinner with Dominic.

Just dinner, she had told herself.

But deep down, she knew it was more than that.

When she arrived at the restaurant—a high-end rooftop lounge glittering with city lights. Dominic was already waiting, dressed in a charcoal-grey suit that looked like it belonged on the cover of a fashion magazine. He stood as she approached, kissed the back of her hand like something out of a fairytale, and pulled out her chair.

“You look breathtaking,” he said, his eyes sweeping over her. “Red suits you.”

Kate blushed. She had spent two hours getting ready, choosing her best dress, fixing her hair three times. And now, as he poured her a glass of wine with practiced elegance, she felt seen. Admired. Elevated.

They talked. He asked about her dreams, her family, her job. He listened intently. And when he spoke, he painted visions of private getaways, luxury homes, and a life free from worry.

“I don’t believe a woman like you should be chasing after danfo buses or calculating the cost of every meal,” he said, his tone smooth, almost hypnotic. “You were made for more, Kate.”

She laughed, nervously. “It’s not that bad. I manage.”

Dominic leaned in, his eyes piercing. “Why manage when you can thrive?”

That question haunted her.

Over the next few weeks, Kate found herself drawn to him more and more. She stopped replying to David’s messages as quickly. She cancelled a date they had planned. Her mother asked what was wrong, but Kate brushed it off with a smile.

Dominic sent flowers to her office, invited her to events where she met powerful people, and never let her touch the bill. She felt like she had stepped into a different world—one where everything sparkled and the air smelled of wealth.

Still, there were brief moments when his charm cracked. One evening, when she joked about his lateness, he frowned deeply and replied, “I don’t like being questioned.” The air chilled around them for a moment, but he quickly recovered, brushing it off with a laugh and a kiss on her cheek.

Kate laughed too. But something inside her stirred.

She told herself she was imagining things. After all, nobody was perfect. David had his flaws too—his modest dreams, his predictable nature, his struggle to keep up financially. Compared to Dominic’s world of silk and security, David suddenly felt... ordinary.

One evening, Dominic brought her to his penthouse apartment. The floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city skyline. Everything gleamed—glass, chrome, gold.

“This could be your life,” he said, standing behind her, his hands resting lightly on her shoulders. “You could have everything. Comfort. Class. Power.”

Kate looked at their reflection in the glass. She barely recognized herself, dressed in borrowed wealth, standing in a stranger’s world.

“I want you by my side, Kate,” he whispered. “Marry me.”

Her breath caught. “What?”

“I’m serious. Say yes, and I’ll take care of everything. You’ll never need to worry again.”

The air thickened. Her mind spun. Marriage?

She didn’t answer right away. She asked for time. Dominic nodded, smiling as if he already knew what her answer would be.

That night, Kate couldn’t sleep. David called, but she didn’t pick up. She sat by her window, staring at the sky, her heart heavy.
