BENEATH THE GOLD

Chapter 3: A Golden Wedding

The church was drenched in white roses and gold ribbons. A soft orchestra played in the background, their music drifting gently through the air like a promise. Cameras clicked, guests whispered in awe, and the scent of wealth hung heavily in the air.

Kate stood at the altar, her hands trembling beneath her veil. The gown she wore shimmered with thousands of tiny beads, each one catching the light like stars. She should have felt like a princess. Instead, her heart felt like it had been wrapped in cotton—too quiet, too heavy, too still.

Her mother’s seat was empty.

Kate had begged her parents to come, even if they didn’t approve. Her father had said nothing. Her mother had only cried.

“You’re not just leaving David,” her mother had whispered, “you’re leaving yourself behind.”

The words clung to her like perfume she couldn’t wash off.

Now, standing before the priest, Kate looked into Dominic’s eyes. He was smiling—confident, proud, possessive. His grip on her hands was firm, almost too firm. She forced a smile in return as the vows began.

“I, Kate, take you, Dominic…”

Each word felt like a thread being pulled from her soul.

The reception was a spectacle. Champagne flowed endlessly. There were fireworks, live music, a chocolate fountain taller than a child. Kate’s phone buzzed quietly in her purse—David..

She didn’t check the message.

Dominic made a toast, his arm draped around her waist like a brand.

“To my queen,” he said, lifting his glass. “The most beautiful, most loyal woman in the world.”

Applause thundered.

But the word loyal echoed differently in Kate’s ears.

Later that night, alone in the master suite of a five-star hotel, Kate sat at the edge of the bed, still in her wedding gown. Her back ached, her makeup had faded, and her heart had grown louder now that the music had stopped.

Dominic entered, loosened his tie, and reached for the mini bar. “You did well today,” he said casually, sipping whiskey. “Everyone was impressed.”

Kate looked at him. “Did you… mean everything you said? About loyalty?”

He turned, his expression unreadable. “Of course. I value loyalty more than anything. Especially from my wife.”

She nodded slowly. “Even if she disagrees with you sometimes?”

His face changed—just slightly. A flicker of irritation.

“You won’t need to disagree with me if you trust me,” he said, setting the glass down sharply. “That’s how this works.”

And just like that, the air in the room shifted.

Kate looked down at her hands, the diamond ring on her finger flashing under the soft lights. It was heavy. Too heavy.

She had crossed a line. There was no going back.

But somewhere deep inside, beneath the gold and glitter, her soul whispered a warning.

This is not what love feels like.
