BENEATH THE GOLD

Chapter 10: A New Dawn

Justice has a way of arriving late but it does arrive.

It happened on an ordinary Tuesday morning. Kate sat in her parents’ living room, sipping tea, when the phone rang. It was the police.

Dominic had been arrested.

Mariam’s testimony, the hospital’s report, and Kate’s written statement had been more than enough. On top of that, investigations into his shady business dealings revealed a trail of fraud, laundering, and corruption. Dominic would not be walking free again.

When the officer confirmed that Dominic would be facing trial for assault, battery, and multiple financial crimes, Kate exhaled a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. For the first time in months, she was now truly safe.

But there was still one more apology she needed to make.

David.

The man she had once loved deeply, truly and left behind for a glittering lie. Kate didn’t know if he would even agree to see her but she had to try.

She found him in the park, the same one where they used to dream about the future together.

David looked almost the same—warm eyes, easy smile and even more peaceful. Beside him stood a woman, holding his hand. She was radiant, and when David looked at her, it was with a kind of pure, steady joy that pierced Kate’s heart with both sadness and gratitude.

David had moved on. He had found real happiness and it would be unfair of her to take that away from him.

After a brief conversation, David walked a little distance with Kate while his wife waited. Kate struggled for words. The apology burned in her throat.

“I’m sorry,” she finally said, voice trembling. “For everything. For hurting you. For not listening. For choosing wrong.”

David was quiet for a moment, looking at the trees swaying in the breeze. Then he smiled—not bitterly, not with anger but with kindness.

“I’m happily married. I forgave you a long time ago, Kate,” he said. “You deserved better. I just hope you know that now.”

Tears filled Kate’s eyes. “I do," she whispered. "I really do.”

They said goodbye without bitterness, without regret. It was closure and peaceful.

Later that night, Kate sat outside, staring at the stars. She opened her journal and wrote:

“Beneath the gold, I found the truth.

Beneath the lies, I found myself.

I lost so much. But I gained my freedom.

Hope and a heart that will never be fooled again."

She closed the book, feeling a quiet joy blooming inside her. She made her way to her room and smiled, although this wasn’t the life she had planned. But it was real. It was earned.
