BENEATH THE GOLD

Chapter 4: The Weight of Silence

Days turned into weeks, and life as Dominic’s wife became a quiet performance.

Kate lived in a beautiful prison—marble floors, silk sheets, a closet full of designer labels. From the outside, she had everything. But inside, a slow, steady loneliness grew like mold behind painted walls.

Dominic traveled often for business. One day, when he was home, he made Kate barb her hair so that other men would not find her attractive. He was always precise—dinner at seven, silence by ten, no room for disobedience or delay. He rarely raised his voice, but his moods spoke louder than any words. A sharp look. A slammed door. A sudden withdrawal of affection.

Kate learned quickly how to walk on eggshells.

One afternoon, she wore a short-sleeved blouse to meet him for lunch. It was nothing inappropriate—light, floral, elegant. But as soon as Dominic saw her, his jaw tensed.

“Is that what you chose to wear out?” he asked, his voice calm, but dangerous.

Kate blinked, caught off guard. “Yes, I am I thought it was—”

“I don’t like my wife showing off her body to strangers.”

She apologized, even though she didn’t understand what she had done wrong, the dress was decent. They ate in silence after that.

Later that night, he bought her a new dress, long-sleeved, high-necked, dark blue and forced her to wear it.

“You look better when you leave something to the imagination,” he said, pressing a kiss to her forehead like a father correcting a child.

Kate smiled, even as something in her chest cracked a little deeper.

She stopped wearing bright colours. She deleted her social media accounts. She began second-guessing every word, every outfit, every move. The once-vibrant girl David loved was now fading.

One evening, while cleaning out her drawers, Kate found an old polaroid photo of her and David, taken the day he had surprised her with lunch at her office. Her smile in the photo was wide, real. David had flour on his cheek from the cupcakes he brought, and she remembered how they had eaten them right there, on her desk, laughing like two children in love.

Her hands trembled as she held the photo.

That night, Dominic came home earlier than expected. She hid the picture quickly, but not quickly enough.

“What was that?” he asked, narrowing his eyes.

“Nothing,” Kate replied too fast.

He didn’t press further. He just stared at her, long and hard, then walked away without a word.

But from that day, he started locking certain rooms in the house. He took her phone one evening and scrolled for hours before returning it.

Kate stood in the mirror after he fell asleep and stared at herself. Her skin still glowed, but her eyes were tired. She wasn’t happy.

The silence in her marriage was no longer just between them. It had settled inside her.
