THE NARROW PATH

Chapter 6: A New Step

Yinka woke up early on Monday morning. She felt different. She wasn’t excited, but she wasn’t sad either. She got ready for school, packed her books, and didn’t forget her storybook.

Before she left, her mother touched her shoulder. “You are strong, Yinka,” she said. “Don’t forget that.”

Yinka nodded. She didn’t say anything, but the words stayed with her all day.

At school, things were changing. Some classmates who once ignored her started speaking to her. Others smiled in her direction. She was surprised to see the changes in her classmate’s behaviour. Even Sade glanced at her once and it was not with anger, but with regret.

However, Yinka didn’t expect things to go back to how they were. But she no longer felt sad and she has a new friend who came to sit beside her in class. Nnenna’s personality was different from Sade but

After class, Mr. Ajayi gave them a writing task.

“Write about a time you made a hard choice,” he said. “It can be real or imaginary. Be honest.”

Yinka held her pen tightly. Her hands didn’t shake this time.

She began to write:

“It was not a loud moment. I did not shout. I did not fight. I just said no in my heart. And that ‘no’ was hard, but it made me stronger.”

She didn’t use big words.

She just told the truth.

That evening, she helped her brother with homework. Then she sat outside and opened her notebook. She wrote another short note:

“I may be small, but I will walk tall. I may be quiet, but my heart is loud. I will stay on the narrow path.”

The stars were out, blinking gently in the sky.

And for the first time in a long while, Yinka smiled, not because someone told her to.

But because she meant it.
